Note: Ferdinand Shrofe (note spelling) and Anna Elizabeth Brand were
the witnesses to the baptism of Anna Elizabeth the infant
daughter of Christian and Anna Mann on 17 October, 1775 at the
German Reformed Church at Mount Pleasant, in Alexandria
township, New Jersey. Ferdinand Srope is on the list of
rateables (taxpayers) for June of 1778 in Bethlehem township,
Hunterdon County, New Jersey. He paid a tavern tax in 1789.
He served in the New Jersey Militia from Bethlehem township in
1792. Probably in the third Company under Captain Andrew
Wilson, Lieutenant William Apgar, and Ensign Daniel Osborn. In
1802 he was Constable of Bethlehem township. The 1830 census
for that township in Hunterdon County, New Jersey shows
Ferdinand Srope as age between 80 and 90 on page 393. So he
was born between 1740 and 1750. He died the first week in May,
1835 in Bethlehem township, no record has been found of where
he is buried. He married Dorothea___________ between 1804 and
1812 in the German Reformed Church of Alexandria at Mount
Pleasant. He was then between age 54 and 62. The 1830 census
shows one female between age 70 and 80 in the household of
Ferdinand Srope. This would indicate the she was born between
1750 and 1760. She was still living in 1836 according to land
records on file in Hunterdon County, New Jersey. No record has
been found of when she died or where she is buried. In the book
'History of Hunterdon County' compiled by James P. Snell and
published in 1881, in the section relating to Union township on
page 508 he states the following: 'Ferdinand Srope came from
France and settled in what was then the township of Amwell,
afterwards Bethlehem, and now Union township near where the
Norton postoffice is now located. Here his son, Christopher
Srope was born on 02 November, 1761'. All the information in
that record was presumed to be correct because William Trimmer
Srope (1803-1906) was one of the consultants who had gathered
the records for that publication and is credited for his
assistance in at least two places in that book. William
Trimmer Srope was the first known record keeper in the Srope
family. He was considered to be the most knowledgeable
historian of his time in Hunterdon County, New Jersey. He was
one of the original founders of the Hunterdon County Historical
Society. Over 200 entries to this volume came from his
original records. I further presumed that it was he who wrote
the history of the Srope family as recorded on page 508, and
took it to be all fact, since he was a historian. However,
records and documents on file at the County Court House in
Flemington, Hunterdon County, New Jersey and elsewhere seem to
disprove some of the statements in the first paragraph of the
Srope family record. Namely, were brothers, not father and son.
Their father was Johann Christoph Schrčopp, born 18 February,
1727 at Oberčowisheim, Germany. There were also four other
brothers, Johann Martin, Andrew, Henrich and John. The
relationship of the members of this family were established
from records of land sales and Deeds on file at the Hunterdon
County Surrogates office. Mr. Fred Sissor, III, a professional
researcher from the Hunterdon County Historical Society
searched the records and furnished the following: Hunterdon
County Deeds Vol. 3, page 63 01 May, 1800 Charles Stewart
